Tissues, Organs, and Systems of Living Things - Big Ideas
- Plants and animals, including humans, are made of specialized cells, tissues, and organs that are organized into systems.
- Developments in medicine and medical technology can have social and ethical implications.

Week 5 - Welcome to Biology, before you begin, go to your folder on the google drive, make 2 folders in the main folder with the names Optics and Systems and dump everything from the optics unit into its respective folder. For this week we will be focusing on days 1-3. Please watch the respective video lessons and complete the worksheets. Under day 3 you will begin to practice your biological drawings (see instructions below) Biology is much heavier in lectures than optics so be prepared to be watching more video lessons. NOTE**** I have shared with you all a unique folder where you are to add all of your work for the weeks. Please make sure that the work you submit is clearly titled (pictures of written work are just fine) This folder is only shared between the you and myself. If you have trouble locating this folder, search for your name in the search field in google drive and you will be able to find it.

You will be spending 3 days a week for the next 4 weeks creating and perfecting the skills of biological drawings. Please chose 12 images from google of different cells and tissues from both plants and animals. Submit 3 per week with at least 1 from each plant and animal weekly. I will make suggestions for you on a weekly basis but they are only suggestions. This week I would like you to try the following Please go through the drawing skills booklet and the summary for the Biological drawing rules.
1. Cork Cells (like Robert Hooke) [Plant] 2. Onion Cells (from the root tip) [Plant] 3. Cheek Cells [Animal] |

Week 6 - Please work from Day 4-5 this week. Watch the video lessons that I have provided you below and take notes on them. Complete the sheet on Specialized cell types to match the definition of the type of cell to the name of the cell through research (day 4). Read the article on stem cells and answer the questions (Day 4). Watch the Eyes of Nye video on cloning and stem cells and write an opinion paragraph with you standpoint on Therapeutic vs Reproductive cloning. After watching the video on cancers read the article on cancer and answer the questions at the bottom (day 5). I have given you notes to review as well on cancer, regeneration, cloning etc. Lastly, complete your 3 biological drawings listed in day 5.

Week 7 - This is a shorter week as we have the holiday on Monday (Happy Victoria Day). This week you will be learning about the cell cycle and mitosis. Please watch the two video lessons on the cell cycle and mitosis and fill out the mitosis worksheet. Everything up to Day 6 is on the quiz you will need to complete by Friday found under Day 6. I have also included a picture of my chalk board to help stream line your notes. Under day 7 you will complete the onion cell biological drawing lab which is the biological drawing you will receive a mark for. Please make sure you know your rules for biological drawings. For that lab, you have been given a microscope image of an onion root tip and you are being asked to find 3 cells going through 3 different stages in mitosis. Draw and label these cells and the stage of mitosis they are in.

Week 8 - This week we will be focusing on Day 8 - 11. Under day 8, please watch the viode lesson on Vascular Plants and make notes. Fill out the table for plant tissues to the right. Under day 9, watch the video lesson on Angiosperms to identify the parts of a flower. I have included the completed plant organ diagrams for the labels. Download the Plant Tissues Sub Types File and fill in the tissues functions with the help of the video lesson and google. Under day 10, watch the three video lessons and complete the animal tissue table. Under day 11, watch the video lessons and fill in the animal organ diagrams for the heart and the skin. Submit all when done

Week 9 - There are 3 weeks of school to go...good job we have made it this far. Keep up the good work. This week most of the marking that has yet to be completed will be done. I am going to host another question and answer session this week on Thursday morning at 8am (Link Below). Please come with questions in hand.
As for this week, Please watch the three dissection videos on the Earth Worm, the Cows Eye and the Frog. Complete the Earth worm lab under day 14 and submit. You can read the lab-frog dissection and have a look at the marking scheme (this is what would have been given to you you if you were at school). Make sure you know where all the parts on the frog dissection marking are on an actual frog. Watch the cow eye dissection as it links our biology unit and our optics unit. Lastly, complete the unit test for the Tissues organs and Systems unit and submit. Next week we start our climate change unit.
